Millions of people enjoy surfing, but it takes a special kind of athlete to tackle the biggest swells. And then there are some waves that many just won’t even go near. And that’s with a shining yellow sun to light your way for you.

So when you’re talking about tackling these killer waves at night, well, that’s just plain unheard of — unless you’re Mark Visser, who strapped on what some are calling “ground-breaking NASA submarine lighting“, as well as a custom LED-embedded board before riding Hawaii’s famous Jaws break, which regularly sees waves measuring 30 to 40 feet high (think twice as tall as the house you probably grew up in).

What’s more, the attempt took place early Thursday morning at about 2 a.m. The result is some of the most incredible surfing footage ever captured.
