John Lewis managers have found and thanked a little girl who wrote them a letter of apology for breaking a Christmas bauble.
The department store launched an internet appeal for help tracking down five-year-old Faith, who sent a touching note with two pound coins stuck to it after accidentally smashing the festive decoration on a visit to the chain’s Cambridge branch last weekend.
The handwritten letter, which was addressed to the store’s “Christmas Department”, left staff deeply moved and determined to find the young child so they could thank her for her honesty.
It read: "To John Lewis Cambridge. I'm sorry I broke a Christmas bauble on Saturday. It cost two pounds. Here is the money for it. Sorry again, Faith, aged 5."
In response to publicity about the little girl’s kind gesture, Faith’s mother contacted the John Lewis call centre this morning to confirm that her daughter had sent the note.
However, she said Faith was very shy and so would not want to speak publicly about her letter.
Dominic Joyce, the manger of John Lewis’s Cambridge branch, said: "We'd like to thank everyone who has helped us to find Faith. The response has been overwhelming.
“We wanted to have the opportunity to say thank you and we have now been able to do that. We hope Faith and her family have a very merry Christmas."
Mr Joyce said Faith had clearly been well brought up by her parents.
He said: "We didn't have much to go on - just a first name, a Cambridge postmark and what might be a self-portrait. We get lots of nice letters but nothing quite as special as this."
He added that because the girl had visited on one of the store's busiest weekends, nobody had noticed the broken bauble.
Mr Joyce had earlier tweeted: "The cutest letter sent to JL Cambridge. There is no address so we wanted to thank Faith on Twitter."
