Turanor PlanetSolar is the largest solar-powered boat in the world. The boat is registered in Switzerland and was financed by a German entrepreneur. Construction cost was € 12.5 million. Turanor PlanetSolar known under the project name PlanetSolar, was designed by LOMOcean Design, built by Knierim Yachtbau in Kiel, Germany and launched on 31 March 2010.
The height of the boat is 6.3 meters, weight 90 tons and it measures 31 meters long and 15 meters wide and can hold up to 50 passengers. It covered 516 square meters of solar panels rated 120 kW highest engine power. The boat's shape allows it to reach speeds of up to 14 knots.
The boat officially set off on its around the world trip on September 27th, 2010 from Monaco. After crossing the Atlantic ocean, the Panama Canal, the Pacific ocean, the Indian ocean, the Suez Canal, and the Mediterranean, the Turanor completes its trip on May 4th, 2012 after 584 days sailing around the globe by arriving at Hercule Harbor in Monaco. After a successful trip around the world, the Turanor shows that it’s possible to travel the world without the use of any fossil fuel.
